You might not have heard of these movies. If you’re thinking about the ones based on the Xbox and Playstation games, we’re not talking about those, but rather the trilogy of bizarre action flicks by Japanese crazy-man director Takashi Miike. This trilogy of movie downloads offers just what you’re looking for if you’ve gotten tired of the same old same old from American action flicks and you’re ready for something a little different, and a little strange.

The first film in the trilogy, Dead or Alive, was conceived simply to get two of Japan’s biggest cult legends together, Sho Aikawa and Riki Takeuchi. These two are sort of the Japanese cult film answer to DeNiro and Pacino, so Dead or Alive is sort of the Japanese cult answer to Heat. It was also focused on solving one of the primary problems with that movie: The anti-climactic ending.

We can’t spoil the ending of Dead or Alive for you, and you wouldn’t believe us if we did. Just check it out and see for yourself. The whole movie is designed to be non-stop, exciting, fast paced, and entirely over the top the whole way through.

Dead or Alive 2 is one of those rare sequels that blows the original away, even though the original was already pretty good. Aikawa and Takeuchi are recast as two entirely different characters, that parallel their original roles in some interesting ways. Where the first is about a cop and a gangster out to get each other, this one focuses on two childhood friends who have grown up to become hitmen who donate all of their earnings to buying medicine for children in third world countries. This movie is all heart.

This one is much more positive, much more life affirming, and surprisingly sweet and sentimental, whereas the first was relatively dark and negative in comparison. It’s interesting having these two movies, that are so different from each other, and yet have so much in common.

The third takes the whole series in an all new direction, going into science fiction akin to Blade Runner or Robocop, that sort of cyberpunk, androids and megacorporations sort of theme. It’s probably the least interesting of the trilogy, but it’s really interesting for how it ties the whole thing together.

If you want more after these three flicks, check out Deadly Outlaw Rekka also by Miike. It really takes the same approach to action. Everything is very over the top and surreal, and it’s all pretty exciting.

The first movie’s trailer proudly declares that Miike is the dog with rabies of the Japanese film world, and it’s true, it’s not just a clever tagline for the trailer. The guy makes something like five or six movies a year, and has made about one hundred since his debut some years ago. He is one of the most prolific directors out there, and while the quality varies, if only one in ten is any good, he’s already one of the greats.

There are specific services that are available to provide you with the ability to get great quality songs on your iPod. Movie Game Rental (Ironically, this film was underwritten by Standard Oil! Can she really act, sing, dance, produce or direct’

Was it worth the wait?

Back in the very early 90′s the supposed final chapter of the Friday the 13th movies opened and audiences saw the final few seconds of the film before the credits rolled, Freddy Krueger’s claw bursts from the ground to drag Jason Vorhees mask down to hell (as this film also parallels Freddy’s Dead The Final Nightmare). The studio and the fans asked the question: will New Line make a Freddy versus Jason movie? This became the genesis of over ten years worth of Fangoria and movie magazine articles, I know because I was one of the fans who followed this journey. Many, many things were wrote with this movie in mind featuring rumors that cast members from both franchises (lead psychos already cast) would return to appear in this well hyped movie. These rumors were not fulfilled and the project went back into the New Line vault for a few more years pending a decent script and the right director.

Finally following many versions of the script one was picked out, with a little reworking from David Goyer (Blade, Hellboy) a perfect script now onboard including Robert Englund (Freddy) all signed up and bound to the project, all that was needed was a director. This is what we call development hell’ and rightfully so. Robert Englund who’s previous credits include: V, The Mangler, Wishmaster and the very recent Dance of the Dead and 2001 Maniacs eager to reprise his most prized role, which would be Krueger. New Line have yet to cast the perfect guy to play Jason. Following the noted disappointment by many Friday the 13th fans and according to magazines Kane Hodder who had played Jason for a few sequels (including 2003′s Jason X) hadn’t been selected for Freddy vs. Jason due to the fact that a much taller and less buff guy was needed, someone whom could tower over Englund. Ken Kirzinger whom had been used as a stunt double for Hodder in previous Friday the 13th movies was selected to play the part.

The real reason (if any) for the recasting of Jason remains unknown but some fans of both genres were a bit worried about Kane as he reveled a tattoo of the word Kill on his inner lip in a featurette, which he had done to commemorate how much he loved to play Jason. Big deal I have the symbol of the arborous on my arm, which was the symbol used in Millennium. To each their own and although I enjoyed the new Jason’s performance I do prefer Kane’s edge. Perhaps Englund had something similar done; a tattoo of the boiler room furnace or a screaming Nancy on his chest, who’s to know? Anyway, the development subjects and like the directors/writers/concepts/act ors played out like a bodycount list. New Line asked everyone from Wes Craven to David Fincher and a whole bunch of people until finally they settled on Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) who signs on to direct, following more director changes than the scripts. Sean S. Cunningham (creator of Friday the 13th and House) was always very keen to bring his and Wes Craven’s monsters together in the ultimate showdown of blood, carnage and homage.

2 0 0 3, Freddy vs. Jason is selling out in theatres worldwide with fans like myself lining up to see this a second time and fighting back the urge to see it a third. This movie packed in all the horror and suspense and dark humor of the Freddy the 13th movies (see what I did there!) into one 90 minute moviebut was 90 minutes really worth it? After waiting over, over ten years I for one was expecting something a bit more solid and longer and 90 minutes just didn’t cut it for me. New Line Cinema brought us The Lord of the Rings which was the studios hiatus from their usual brand of product which is mostly horror and such, the roots of New Lines prestige. Let us hope the rumored rematch Freddy vs. Jason 2 (rumored to feature Bruce Campbell’s Ash from Evil Dead…no really!) becomes the second part of a monster mash saga and perhaps Pinhead will turn up to drag them back to hell. They never explained how Freddy pulled himself back together after his daughter blew him to chunky bitsmaybe they had one of them puzzle boxes or something.
